Welcome YogaLovers!

We are an open collective of yoga teachers in Athens, GA meeting monthly for socializing, practice, and a potluck.

About the Collective

The Athens Yoga Collective is a co-creation of yoga study and cameraderie. It's not a class...more like a yoga club. We talk, share, and learn from one another, loosely oriented around a monthly theme and always tied up with a vegetarian potluck. Come deepen your practice and meet yogis from various studios and yoga traditions.

How did this group get started?

The idea for this group simmered in the collective consciousness of Athens for years or possibly decades :) Lindsey Lush, Katelyn TenEyck, and Sarah Whitaker began putting this group together in summer 2012.

Lindsey has decided to bow out of the organizing side of things in order to prepare for motherhood. Anyone who wants get involved with planning, promoting,or any other behind the scenes efforts is welcome to join us! Contact sarahKwhitaker @ gmail or teneyck.katelyn @ gmail for info.

When we started, we met at Whole: MindBodyArt downtown. Brian and Michelle were wonderful to have us there and we were so sad when they announced their closing in January 2013. Afterwards we moved to a temporary home in the community living room above Ben's Bikes which was cozy and funky but we outgrew it quickly! We're happy to report that we have a new relationship with New Earth in downtown Athens who has graciously offered to host and help promote our monthly gatherings.

Who is invited?
Anyone looking to deepen their yoga practice and help build the Athens yoga community. We are particularly in cahoots with The Great Athens Yoga Instructor Collaboration, a group born of the same spirit but focused primarily on practice. Cahoot about from group-to-group! There is plenty of inspiration out there and cross-pollination is the name of the game.

What will we do?
We will meet monthly and take turns sharing ideas and info on yogic and life themes. These themes and the plan for each gathering will be determined by the group---hence the name "collective"!

The basic template for our time together so far has been to pick 2, 3, or 4 of the following and make sure we always leave time for conversation over food. It is very flexible depending on members' requests, offers, and preferences!

20-30 minute led practice
20-30 minute asana workshop
20-30 minute discussion
20-30 minute meditation
20-30 minute led pranayama

Where do you meet?
The collective meets at New Earth Music Hall, located on the western/Prince Ave (aka Dougherty) edge of downtown.

When do you meet?
We meet the first Sunday of each month, 3:00-5:00. Feel free to come and go as needed!

Why join the Athens Yoga Collective?
  • Because our funky little town has such a wealth of yogawisdom and yogalove! But we need organized avenues to share.
  • Maybe you miss the camaraderie of your last yoga teacher training, or maybe you've never been able to afford a yoga teacher training but camaraderie sounds pretty awesome.
  • Because we will connect, practice, learn, share, eat. And who doesn't love all those things?!

  1. The Center for Active Living is looking for volunteers to substitute for our regular teachers when they are unable to teach. We hope the Athens Yoga Collective will volunteer to help our clients maintain their balance and flexibility. If anyone is interested, please contact Nikaela Frederick, the Wellness Coordinator at the Center. She can be reached at 706-549-4850 or nfrederick@accaging.org
